As a kid I was always drawn to the things in the shadows, the ‘monsters’ to be feared, the unexplained evil we were supposed to readily accept as the baddies without ever seeing the story from their point of view.  Trying to see those fantasy worlds through the eyes of those to be detested, whose thoughts, feelings and experiences were rarely delved into, made me into someone who really likes to ponder the meaning and purpose of good and evil.  What really makes something truly horrible, and what do I just not know enough about to understand any differently?

After struggling with some mental health issues that left me grappling tooth and nail with my so called “demons”,  villainising myself for every ‘evil’ thought that ever graced my conscious mind, I found myself alone, completely isolated within my own world, feeling like a stranger to even myself.   

“Who are you? What are you?” 

I fortunately rediscovered an image of my younger self holding a giant monster head toy I was given for Christmas one year.  Looking at the innocent and joyful expression on the face of the girl I once was made me realise just how much I’d unfairly demonised the monsters that dwelled within me.


Feeling a connection to that empathic, sensitive child is incredibly important for me when creating.  She brings the warmth and fun into every creature I breathe life into, reminding me to have empathy and understanding of what I fear.   What am I? I’m just a kid, a grown up and a bunch of demons trying to navigate being alive in the only way I know how. Together we are the Miserable Beasts.

THE BEASTS

Marionettes

Each marionette is hand-sculpted in polymer clay and hand-painted with acrylic paint.  All costumes and controllers are entirely made by hand in Glasgow, and every marionette is hand assembled.  Due to the hand-made nature of the marionettes, no two will ever be the same.

Miserable Beasts are sensitive souls and need to be treated with care.  They are collectors art toys, and are NOT intended for children.  If you want to share the joy of your beast with a child, please ensure they are properly supervised at all times and store the puppet out of reach when not in use.  Careful handling and proper storage will prevent fragile parts from breaking.  Rough handling may cause damage, so please be kind to your beast.  Hang them securely from the hooks provided on the controllers for displaying and be careful not to drop them.  Preventing tangled strings is solely the owner’s responsibility.

Art Dolls

Miserable Beast Art Dolls are all hand made, one of a kind pieces using polymer clay and textile.  These are art dolls and are intended for adult collectors and should not be given to children.  A more detailed description of specific dolls will be available on the product page.

International shipping is currently only available to the USA & Canada.

Shipping rates:

Royal Mail International Tracked (orders under £75) - £15.00

Royal Mail International Tracked (orders £75 and over) - £25.00

 

Tracking details will be provided once the order has been dispatched. We expect international shipments to take around 17 business days to arrive. Please note that due to shipping and customs delays, orders can take up to 6 weeks to arrive. Thank you for your patience.
